Toyota has unveiled the new generation of its bestselling Innova MPV called the Innova Crysta at the 2016 Auto Expo 2016.

The new generation model of the Innova brings in a brand new engine and gearbox along with much sharper looks, all of which sits on a brand new chassis.
So do Toyota's new additions to the tried and trusted Innova formula add up to yet another brilliant MPV ? Read along to see what we think after taking a look at the new Innova Crysta.
Toyota Innova Crysta Exterior And Interior Design
Toyota has gone to town on the design front throwing everything that seemed even slightly curvy about the Innova and replacing it with sharp and pointy edges.
The front looks a lot more muscular and the sharp angular LED projector headlamps give it a quite edgy look. The turn indicators are embedded next to the circular fog lamps instead of their usual place next to the headlamps. The front grille is a twin chrome slat unit that sits atop the gaping air dam.
At the rear the Innova Crysta features asymmetrical boomearang shaped taillamps which seem to be the only redeeming feature of a rear end that looks like it has been flattened into place.
Inside the car, the car has really undergone a transformation with a whole lot more luxury thrown in. The steering wheel is wrapped in leather and features some wooden trim as well. The dashboard is also done up in wood which really takes the new Crysta to a whole new level in terms of luxury.
Keeping in mind the Indian heat, Toyota have placed the air conditioning vents on the dashboard at a higher height to help cooling. Another feature to beat the heat are spaces for 20 1-litre bottles of water, AMong those 20 bottles, owners can keep two of them in the cooled glovebox as well.
There is ton load of new tech including an 8-inch infotainment system that can be controlled by making gestures in the air in front of it.
Also added in are captain seats for the first two rows of passengers which are very well bolstered. The second row seats also feature aircraft style seat back tables where the occupants can place their laptops or food quite comfortably.
Performance & Mileage Of The Toyota Innova Crysta
The New Toyota Innova Crysta is powered by a brand new 2.4-litre turbocharged diesel engine that produces 148bhp @ 3,400rpm and 343Nm of torque @ 1,200 – 2,800rpm.
Also present is another new 2.8-litre diesel engine that produces 172bhp @ 3,400rpm and 360Nm of peak torque @ 1,200 – 3,400rpm.
Both engines feature two driving modes — Eco and Power. The Eco mode is the preferred mode for those mile munchers among you who travel across the city for most of your driving lives while the power mode does what its name specifies and should make the drive a bit more fun.
Toyota has fitted the new Innova Crysta with both a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The latter should bring respite to those who love to take a long trip with the family and prefer not to shift gears all the time.
The new Crysta with its new gearbox and engine, is expected to better the previous Innova's mileage figure of just 13km/l.
Verdict
Toyota have given the new Innova Crysta a new name, looks, engine, gearbox and chassis but they have stuck to the tried and tested formula that has made it such a success in the Indian market.
Prices for the new Innova Crysta are expected to be a bit higher than that of the current model. However, Toyota will try to ensure that any so called competitors like the XUV500 and Scorpio from Mahindra stay away from its share of the pie by keeping the price tag agressive to ensure that people don't stray towards SUVs like they've done in the sub 4-metre segment.
