Toyota Fortuner was the preferred SUV compared to the Ford Endeavour, May 2016 sales indicate better number compared to Ford's SUV. This might be the leader in the list, however, the numbers have dwindled on the last one year.

The Japanese car manufacturer is upgrading its product line with the recent launch of the Innova Crysta and up the ante in the premium MUV segment. India will see the next generation Fortuner in 2017. How does it differ? Here is a comparative analysis of the old vs new.

The new Fortuner is a butch looking SUV, Toyota has worked on the same ideology, but giving it a sharp and modern design. The sleek headlamps with projector headlamps and LED DRLs are imposing and the front profile is tall and handsome.

On the side, the New Fortuner gets the blacked-out pillars and the third window or the glass pane flows along the entire window. The shoulder line is much higher and there is slight kink upward the C-pillar area. The side cladding is black and not the body colours as we see on the old Fortuner.

As for the rear profile, the tail lamps follow the same design language turning sleeker and wrapped around. Shark Fin antenna and the spoiler give the back profile sharper finish. Alloy wheels are of a dual tone of shaved aluminium and black background.

Inside the new Fortuner, a welcome leather trim across the dashboard and door panels, give the Fortuner a grand presence. The designers have given it a modern appeal, which was missing in the old Fortuner.

Being an SUV, Toyota will equip the new Fortuner with off terrain features including DAC (Downhill Assist Control), HAC (Hill Assist Control), A-TRC (Active Traction Control), ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, VSC, Bounce Control and Brake override system.

The old audio system has made for the touchscreen infotainment system with GPS navigation and power and eco drive modes make up the new Fortuner.

Engine Specifications & Gearbox

The New Fortuner will come with 2.4-litre diesel and 2.7-litre petrol engine churning out 147bhp and 400Nm of torque, while the petrol engine produces 161bhp and 242Nm of torque.

The 2.7-litre petrol engine comes mated to automatic and does not get the manual gearbox. As for the 2.4-litre engine, both automatic and manual is available.

In India, the current generation Fortuner is available in 3.0-litre and 2.4-litre diesel engine, no petrol variant is available, however, with the current diesel ban being invoked, Toyota might offer the petrol model to India.

The performance has indeed been tweaked with the new engine for the new Fortuner and will have better output compared to the old Fortuner.


The New Fortuner will be equipped with 7 airbags which include knee airbag for the driver, Isofix with tether anchor. The old Fortuner, the one we have it in India, comes with dual airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, and VSC, Seatbelts with pretensions.

The New Fortuner is indeed a better upgrade and the performance is the key and Toyota has equipped it in form of off road terrain features like Hill and Descent Assist Controls. In terms of design too, the new generation Fortuner is modern and sophisticated.

Pricing is the key to the Fortuner as it will be pitted against the Ford Endeavour which is priced in the bracket of Rs. 25 lakh to Rs. 28 lakh ex-showroom (Delhi) and the Fortuner costs you from Rs. 25 lakh to Rs. 28 lakh.

Toyota will pit the New Fortuner in the same bracket and offer better features to stay on top of the game.
