Designed To Look Sharper — Toyota Etios Old vs New
Toyota has given the Etios sedan a makeover and the results are crisp, clear and sharper. The old Etios did not evoke the best of response from the customer. Toyota is bringing a new and fresh approach to its Etios sedan. Find out what are the differences compared to the old Etios and if Toyota has finally found the package to impress the private car buyers in India.
Design
Toyota has repackaged the Etios with the most changes visible at the front profile of the sedan. The front grille and the bumper are all new; however, the headlamps remain the same. The front bumper gets a blacked out finish which adds sportiness to the Etios. The V-shaped front grille with chrome outlining does look better than the old model.
As for the rear profile of the new Etios, it is more or less the same as the old, with a minor change to the bumper. The chrome strip on the old Etios on the boot now sits in the middle with the badging of ‘Etios' lettering, which adds a bit of freshness to the sedan.
On the interior front, the new Toyota Etios design is the same as the old; however, the new Etios will get a revised analog cluster which is housed in the centre just like the old model. The dashboard is finished off with dual tone beige and black colour scheme. Also seen are chrome embellishment on the AC vents and leather wrapped steering wheel and new seat upholstery.
Engine Specifications and Gearbox
In terms of power, the new Toyota Etios will continue to house the same 1.5-litre petrol and the 1.4-litre diesel units for the sedan and the Liva will get the 1.2-litre petrol and the 1.4-litre diesel unit. Both of the engines will be mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.
Features
Toyota will keep the same features seen in the old Etios, the Brazilian bound Etios has received cruise control, three-point seat belt for the middle passenger, ISOFIX child seat mount and head restraints on the new Etios. The India bound model features are yet to be confirmed; however, there might not be many changes.
Safety
The old Toyota Etios comes with standard fitment of dual airbags at the front, this will be continued to be seen in the new facelifted Etios. The ABS with EBD was seen only in the diesel model of the Etios, while the new Etios could get the ABS with EBD in the petrol as well.
Pricing
The current price of the Toyota Etios is in the price range of Rs 6.42 to 7.75 lakh for the petrol and the diesel unit ranges from Rs 7.55 to 8.88 lakh ex-showroom (Delhi).
As for the Etios Liva, the petrol model ranges from Rs 5.14 to 6.32 lakh and the diesel ranges from Rs 6.44 to 7.47 lakh ex-showroom (Delhi).
The new facelifted Etios is expected to be higher compared to the old Etios, but this will not be very significant and will be competitive in the segment.
Verdict
What the Etios twins lacked was the design and the overall look of the car, it was a hit among the fleet owners and cabbies. The reason for its success among the cab owners was because of its frugal and efficient engine.
Toyota has got the design language in the right direction, it has to focus on the overall package of the Etios. This will add some punch to the Etios sedan and the hatchback Liva's sales.
