Toyota Corolla — The Best Selling Nameplate In The World And We Tell You Why
The Toyota Corolla was first launched back in the year 1966 in Japan and little did the carmaker know that a few decades later, the Corolla would be the best selling vehicle in the world. It is so till date and let's see why.
Firstly, the Toyota Corolla is sold in 150 countries around the world and is made in 16 plants across the globe. The Corolla was the Japanese version of ‘The People's Car' and it did do a great job being one.
One of the main reasons why the Toyota Corolla became such a success is, during the 60's and the 70's, Toyota proved that even a cheap car can be very reliable in the European and American markets.
The second most important reason is that the Toyota Corolla was region specific. The first generation Corolla was designed keeping the needs of three countries in mind, Japan, US, and Australia. Even today, the North American and the European models of the Corolla are totally different compared to each other.
In India, the Toyota Corolla Altis is sold with a choice of either a 1.8-litre petrol engine that makes 138bhp and 173Nm of torque, or with a 1.4-litre diesel engine that makes 87bhp and 205Nm of torque. The car is sold with a manual as well as an automatic gearbox.
The Toyota Corolla was officially recognised as the best selling car in the world in the year 1997 after the carmaker had sold 22.65 million vehicles, beating Volkswagen that had sold 21.53 million units of the Beetle in comparison.
