Tesla Pushed Autonomous Beyond Safety — Mobileye
Israeli company Mobileye, former partner of Tesla in developing autonomous technology has criticised the car maker, as Tesla pushed the limits of autonomous technology beyond safety limits.
Mobileye had developed camera based sensor, used by Autopilot but terminated its partnership with Tesla in July. Since then Mobileye has joined hands with BWM and Intel to develop autonomous technology. It also provides sensor technology for more than 20 companies.
Mobileye Chairman and Founder, Amnon Shashua stated that Autopilot functioned as an assistance system and not as a self driving technology. Although Tesla have not stated that Autopilot can drive by itself, but its customers seemed to have believed it can drive by itself.
After the launch of Tesla's autonomous cars, videos landed on the internet showing Tesla owners driving without their hands on steering wheels and some not even in their driver seats. Already one death has been reported due to a Model S crash in Florida highway.
But Tesla has its own answers, it stated that Mobileye began criticising Tesla after knowing that Tesla is developing its own camera based sensor technology. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating on Autopilot, and will take a look at the design and performance of system.
