SIAM Wants FAME Scheme Extended On Electric & Hybrid Vehicles
The auto industry body, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) is requesting the government to increase the reach of the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicle (FAME) scheme and to be extended from the current two years.
The FAME scheme was piloted for two years and this is the second year and there has been considerable interest from the customers. SIAM wants the government to extend the scheme and encourage customers to opt for vehicles under this scheme.
The government had promoted the eco-friendly vehicles production and launched the FAME scheme last year offering incentives. Electric and hybrid were provided incentives of up to Rs 29,000 for bikes and Rs 1.38 lakh for cars.
Maruti gained from the scheme by launching the mild-hybrid variant of the Ciaz and has reaped benefits on sales. Customers had preferred hybrid cars due to the diesel ban and the increasing price gap between petrol and diesel vehicles.
SIAM wanted the government to create a roadmap for reducing emission, ensuring safety, and bringing fuel efficiency in consultation with the auto industry.
