Perodua Axia/Daihatsu Ayla Caught Testing On Mumbai Roads
Toyota plans on introducing Daihatsu brand in the Indian market. Recently, an uncamouflaged Perodua Axia was caught testing on Mumbai roads. Perodua Axia is a rebadged version of Daihatsu Ayla hatchback which is sold in the Malaysian market.
Most probable reason for Perodua Axia testing on Indian roads is faster adoption in India. Daihatsu is in the news on entering India. Axia and Ayla are based on a common platform and share several components between each other.
Daihatsu could have imported the Perodua Axia so that local suppliers could localise parts. On the other hand, Perodua Axia sports a Malaysian number plate, which could belong to the Malaysian embassy.
Powering the Perodua Axia is a 998cc petrol engine from Toyota. This engine develops 66bhp, along with 90Nm of peak torque output. In Malaysia, Perodua Axia hatchback is offered with a 4-speed automatic and a 5-speed manual transmission.
When Daihatsu launches the Ayla hatchback in India it will face tough competition. Renault Kwid, Datsun redi-GO, Hyundai Eon, and Maruti Suzuki Alto will rival Daihatsu Ayla. Expect pricing to be on par with Indian competition.
