The rule is similar to what has been done in the capital state of Delhi. Failing to adhere to the new rule in Kerala will attract a fine of Rs. 10,000.

The new rule was announce by the bench headed by Justice J Swatanter Kumar, who issued the interim order after hearing a petition filed by Lawyers' Environmental Awareness Forum (LEAF).

The decision was taken after Kochi and other major cities earned the reputation of being highly polluted due to vehicle exhaust gases.
