The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has passed a law in Kerala saying diesel vehicles over 10 years old should be banned in major cities. The NGT has asked this rule to enforced immediately and wants old diesel vehicles off the roads in 30 days.
The rule is similar to what has been done in the capital state of Delhi. Failing to adhere to the new rule in Kerala will attract a fine of Rs. 10,000.
The new rule was announce by the bench headed by Justice J Swatanter Kumar, who issued the interim order after hearing a petition filed by Lawyers' Environmental Awareness Forum (LEAF).
The decision was taken after Kochi and other major cities earned the reputation of being highly polluted due to vehicle exhaust gases.
