Mercedes-Benz Unveils Digital Light Technology
“We are not only striving for beam records, rather we want to achieve an optimum vision and maximum brightness without glare.”
German automaker Mercedes-Benz has introduced an advanced new headlight technology, which is set to feature on its upcoming models. The new digital lights are capable of projecting illuminated symbols such as stop signs, guiding paths and zebra crossings.

Dubbed ‘Digital Light', an advanced high-definition projections technology which has over one million micromirrors per light, and can be altered to suit the environment by using a combination of cameras and radar sensors, the brightness value of each ‘pixel' created by the micromirrors.

Gunter Fischer, Head of Exterior Body Development and Vehicle Operating Systems at Daimler AG said, "We are not only striving for beam records, rather we want to achieve an optimum vision and maximum brightness without glare.

"Innovative functions for supporting the driver and staging communication with other road users significantly optimise safety when driving at night."

The most interesting aspect of the new Digital Light system is the ability to use the headlights as advanced high-definition projectors. The technology will work with the satellite navigation system to project turn off warnings by using the micro-mirror pixels to create sharp images on the road surface.

The system will project a visual warning on the road surface when you get too close to the car in front. It will also illuminate when driving down a narrow street or pathway showing the car's width and other projections for various scenarios.
