Mattias Ekstrom Becomes New World Rallycross Champion
Mattias Ekstrom becomes the new World Rallycross Champion, driving for his self-made EKS rallycross team.
Mattias Ekstrom, driving for his self-made EKS rallycross team, finished fifth in the final at the Estering circuit and he now has 30 points ahead of Petter Solberg, the double champion in the standings.
Even if Ekstrom does not complete the final round of the World Rallycross Championship in Argentina, Ekstrom would still win, keeping his victories count.
Ekstrom said, "To win this championship in the way we have done it for the last two years, building up your own team and trying to win with respect and really do something now in the sport makes me feel really, really happy."
"It's a big effort for my family, the team and all the guys. It's a very special moment." Eriksson on the other hand, won the event in his first appearance in a final this season. Eriksson started on the second row of the grid, behind title competitors Solberg and Ekstrom, but pulled a very clever move around the outside of everyone around the first corner to take a lead.
His main competition later came from Solberg, but he managed to beat the 2003 World Rally Champion in a race to the finish line. Solberg initially dropped behind Andreas Bakkerud, before he fell into the holds of recently crowned European champions Kevin Hansen and Ekstrom.
Bakkerud managed to finish third, behind Eriksson and Solberg, but had to visit the medical centre later for a precautionary check because of minor smoke inhalation.
Johan Kristoffersson raced in the event with a chance of winning the championship to the final round, but a flat tyre on the third lap while in fourth position allowed Solberg to finish ahead of him in the standings.
