Government Orders Removal of Killer Speed Breakers
The Government of India has ordered the removal of all speed breakers from highways across the nation as they hinder the smooth movement of traffic and are a safety hazard for motorists as well.
According to the Times Of India, the Union Road Transport Ministry has ordered all state governments and road agencies like the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), the Border Roads Organisation to provide details of action taken by next Wednesday, 20 April.
The ministry had earlier stated that it found the construction of speed breakers on highways undesirable stating, "This is undesirable, as the function of national highways is to facilitate movement of traffic. Speed breakers can be a source of serious hazards and accidents to the fast-moving traffic,"
According to the Road Transport Ministry's 2014 Road Accident Report, 6,672 people lost their lives due to accidents by potholes and speed breakers.
