Ford To Be The First US Automaker To Import Cars From India
Ford will be the first US automaker to import India made cars to the US market.
American car manufacturer Ford has announced that it will be manufacturing the new EcoSport compact SUV in India in 2018.
Ford will be the maiden US automaker to import cars from India. As President-elect Donald Trump stated that he will be imposing 35 percent tax on cars built in Mexico, Ford has shifted its focus to India, where the manufacturer has two plants in Chennai and Sanand.
The Ford's Chennai plant will increase its production capacity. The manufacturing facility was the base plant for Asian markets. Now the strategy has been reconsidered and will manufacture crossover models to US market.
Ford revealed the 2017 EcoSport at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 14. The EcoSport has been in production since 2013 and is sold in more than 100 markets worldwide.
Ford has launched the compact SUV when the global automotive trend is leaning towards small SUVs. According to Ford, the sales of compact SUV will double in next five years.
Ford Marketing Manager for SUVs, Michael O'Brien said, "I think our view is that while (the) segment has grown significantly, there is lots more growth coming in 2020."
But Ford is opposing Trump's decision to impose 35 percent import tax on cars. The firm stated that it not only hurts Ford but the US economy too.
