Automatic Cars Are A Breeze To Drive In City, Still Lags With Only 7% Share

The automatic transmission cars have become the modern day norm in Indian automobile industry. Specially with cities being flocked by vehicles, adding to the traffic problems. Also compared to olden technology, now automatics have become flawless in operation and it's getting cheaper too. These factors have played their part in almost doubling the sales of automatic cars in 2015.

In fact, in previous year 7% of the cars were sold with automatic transmission. The new cars which has been in the market with automatic shifting have gained good reviews. Taking for example the recently launched Toyota Innova Crysta, half the models sold are the automatic ones, Hyundai Creta too shares 20% automatic variant sales. Same with the Honda as well, with its Jazz automatic gaining 23% of sales. Precisely, in every four petrol cars Honda sells, one will be auto transmission.

With the advent of new automated manual transmission(AMT), the automatic trend has reached new levels. Cars such as Maruti Suzuki Celerio was successful only because it had this AMT feature. Looking at the numbers 44% Celerio's were sold with AMT equipped. Even the entry level models such as Alto K10 and Wagon R are coming with AMT's.

Currently Maruti Suzuki is offering AMT gearboxes in its Alto K10, WagonR, Celerio, and Swift DZire. Its latest hatch Baleno comes wit CVT, which costs a few extra rupees. Whereas the Ciaz and Ertiga gets the traditional automatics. In total Maruti Suzuki has managed to sell 56,000 automatic cars in FY 15-16, An increase in 75% compared to previous years.

The traditional automatic cars are existing in the market for a long time now. And the sales numbers indicates the advantage of automatics. In the SUV department, Toyota Fortuner has been sold 35% of automatic versions, and Corolla Altis automatic sales has gone up from 25% to 50% in the past four years.

However, these all the developments are not showing any drastic increase in automatic sales in the Indian market. On the other hand USA has almost 80% of its cars sales with the automatic transmission.
