Ford has unveiled its smallest addition to the SUV lineup, the EcoSport, ahead of the LA Auto Show 2016. This model is the facelifted model of the EcoSport which is expected to enter the Indian shores by mid-2017.
In what could be first among Detroit's Big 3 automakers, EcoSport is going to be made in India and exported to the U.S. The Ford EcoSport is currently being manufactured in Chennai.
For the U.S. General Motors has been importing the Buick Envision from China, but what comes as a surprise is Ford choosing to import it from India.
The American company has been under attack in the recent months for moving production of small cars the U.S. to Mexico. The Ford EcoSport is also produced in Brazil as well.
Michael O'Brien, Ford marketing manager for SUVs in the U.S. said that the EcoSport is built in six location around the globe and sell it in 100 markets and just like how the Explorer is built in the U.S. and exported to other countries, the EcoSport will be imported from Asia-Pacific region.
Ford has been manufacturing the EcoSport from 2013 and is also assembled in Brazil, Thailand and Russia. The Romanian plant will start churning out the EcoSport from 2017.
The EcoSport launch in the U.S. comes at the time when the sales of the compact SUVs are booming with sales of 276,000 topping in the year 2015. Ford feels this number will only double in the coming years.
In the U.S. the Ford EcoSport will be up against the like of Chevrolet Trax, Fiat 500X, Honda HR-V, Jeep Renegade, Mazda CX-3, and the Nissan Juke.
The U.S. spec Ford EcoSport will be powered by the 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine and the 2.0-litre petrol engine as well.
