Volkswagen Imports New Beetle To India; Launch Around The Corner
Volkswagen has imported the all-new Beetle to India as a Completely Built Unit (CBU). The new premium hatchback is expected to go on sale in India by 2015-end. Previously, Volkswagen removed the Beetle from its Indian portfolio, owing to poor sales.
Powering the new Beetle will be a 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine. The engine will produce 158bhp and 250Nm of peak torque output. Volkswagen has mated the Beetle engine to a 6-speed manual transmission for international markets.
The iconic hatchback from Volkswagen will compete with BMW 1 Series, Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Mini Cooper, and Fiat 500. Volkswagen Beetle has a rich heritage and has gone through considerable changes over the years.
In International markets, the Beetle is currently offered as a convertible and several other unique options. For India, however, Volkswagen could launch only their regular hatchback model. Depending on demand, Volkswagen India could consider bringing other variations of the hatchback as well.
The new Volkswagen Beetle is expected to be priced between Rs. 20 lakh to Rs. 30 lakh ex-showroom. Globally, the new Beetle is focussed at women drivers, however, in India they could target younger male buyers too.
