Volkswagen Emission Scandal Explained
Volkswagen had used a cheat software in its diesel engine (EA189 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine) that showed low emissions while being tested. The cheat software managed to identify the car is being tested for emission by monitoring engine operation, air pressure, speed, and even steering wheel position. And during the emission test, the software switched the engine to a safe mode in which the engine ran below normal performance resulting in lower emissions. Once the car was back on the road, the cheat software switched the safe mode off and the engine emitted nitrogen oxide pollutants up to 40 times above the permissible limit in US.
