Renault To Launch An AMT Model Of The Kwid In 2016
Renault Kwid compact hatchback will receive an all-new engine and an AMT gearbox in 2016. We are most likely to witness this new model at the 2016 Auto Expo in Delhi. However, no specifications of the new engine has been revealed or discussed by Renault India, so far.
Currently, under the hood of Renault Kwid is a 799cc, inline three-cylinder, petrol engine. This engine produces 53bhp and 72Nm of peak torque and returns a mileage of 25.17 km/l. Renault has mated the engine to a 5-speed manual transmission.
There is a high possibility that Renault could utilise the current Kwid engine, which will be bored out to 1-litre engine (1000cc).
Regarding AMT, Renault could offer the 799cc and 1000cc engine with this option. For the moment, it is unclear whether Renault will use Magneti Marelli's AMT technology or develop an in-house AMT transmission.
In India, Renault Kwid competes with the likes of Maruti Suzuki Alto, Hyundai Eon and soon to be launched Datsun Redi-Go. At this moment, Hyundai Motors is the only manufacturer to offer two engine options for their entry-level hatchback, the Eon.
The Kwid has witnessed an overwhelming response in India. Since launch, Renault has managed to rake in over 50,000 bookings and has a waiting period of minimum six months. Production has been increased, and soon Renault India will commence export too.
