2016 Audi R18 LMS World Endurance Racer Unveiled
Audi Sport has unveiled the latest iteration of its World Endurance Championship racer — the 2016 R18 LMS LMP1.
The new WEC racer, features a traditional lithium ion battery charging system, which allows Audi to push the electric power harvested to 6 MegaJoules of power, the same amount of power harvested by its rival and stablemate from the VW group, the Porsche 919.
The extra power is a response to Audi's worst season in endurance racing since 2009. The Porsche 919 beat it to the construuctors championship as well as the drivers championship and kicked it to third place in its favorite hunting ground — The 24 Hours of LeMans – which was only Audi's third defeat at the legendary French track since 2000. The other two losses had come at the hands of Bentley in 2003 and Peugeot in 2009.
Both Audi and Porsche have also revealed that they will be cutting the number of cars participating in the 2016 WEC to two cars per team.
