Audi A8 Delayed To Get Autonomous Technology: Is It Worth The Wait?

Audi has delayed the A8 sedan launch by a year, to make it the first car that has autonomous driving capability.

The German brand's luxury flagship sedan will not make a public debut before late 2017.

The upcoming Audi A8 luxury sedan will be introduced with advanced assisted driving technology, and also an autonomous function capable of speeds up to 64 km/h.

Audi's A8 could be a technical masterpiece, which is looking to take down its rival in this segment, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Audi will make extensive use of its cloud computing for the piloted driving technology. The car will be able to constantly communicate with with mainframe computers. The data stored will be accessible by other VW cars.

The Audi A8 will have sensors that will give the car with:

  • 360-degree coverage
  • Long-range radar
  • Laser scanners
  • Mono video cameras facing forward
  • Medium range radar facing rearwards
  • Ultrasonic sensors on each side

The upcoming A8 will be a car that was entirely designed from scratch by Marc Lichte, the new Design Chief. The car will be designed based on the Audi Prologue Concept.
