AM General To Build Mercedes R-Class In America
AM General, the company which originally designed and built the Hummer, now has the task of building the Mercedes R-Class in America.
The Mercedes will be built in AM General's 675,000 square-foot Commercial Assembly Plant in Mishawaka, which is no more producing the Hummer.
Mercedes has moved the R-Class production here because the production line in the Mercedes plant was needed to manufacture a different model.
The Mercedes plant in Tuscaloosa currently produces models like the M-Class, GL-Class and the C-Class. This plant will soon be manufacturing the GLE Coupe as well.
This multi-year contract between Mercedes and AM General to build the vehicle is the first of its kind in America, but not new to Mercedes. The Mercedes G-Class is built by by Magna Steyr in Austria, on behalf of Mercedes.
Mercedes is ready to hire and train hundreds of workers to build the R-Class, which will roll off the production line this summer.
AM General has more than five decades of experience in two separate assembly plants meeting the changing needs of the defense and commercial automotive industries. The Company has produced more than 1.5 million vehicles, supported by its employees at major facilities in Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio, and a strong supplier base that stretches across 43 states.
