Volkswagen Group Delivers Record 4 Million Vehicles Till May 2014

The Volkswagen Group delivered 4.11 million vehicles during the time period of January-May 2014. A number that's been reached for the first time, resulting in a growth of 6.3 percent. In May alone the company sold 864,600 units, a growth figure of 5.9 percent.

In Europe, brands belonging to the group sold 1.64 million vehicles, of which 866,200 units were sold in Western Europe. Germany accounted for 502,200 of these, while Central and Eastern Europe accounted for 274,000 units.

Russian was the only market which registered a 5.8 percent drop in sales, having sold 113,800 units against 120,900 units from the corresponding period.

In contrast, the VW Group did not perform very well in the Americas. North America witnessed sales of 350,400 units, (360,000; -2.7 percent), of which 237,900 units were sold in the U.S (249,300; -4.6 percent). South America contributed 296,000 units (375,200; -21.1 percent, with Brazil being the largest market, with 229,500 unit sales (276,300; -16.9 percent).

The Asia-Pacific region on the other hand, continued to be the major source of sales for the VW Group, accounting for 1.66 million vehicle sales (1.43; +16.0 percent). As expected, China was the single most largest market in this region, contributing 1.51 million vehicles (1.28; +17.7 percent).

Breaking up the figures brand wise, VW branded vehicles sold the highest, at 2.55 million units, followed by Audi at 713,900 units, Skoda at 428,000 units, Seat at 162,500 units and Porsche at 71,500 units.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles delivered 178,300 units between january and May 2014. Note that all the numbers mentioned exclude MAN and Scania sales.

Group Board Member for Sales Christian Klingler said: "The Volkswagen Group brands delivered over four million vehicles for the first time in the period to May. That is an encouraging development, particularly in view of the mixed performance on world markets", Group Board Member for Sales Christian Klingler said in Wolfsburg on Friday. "Even though our Group and its brands are in an excellent position to respond to the different trends in the world regions, market demands still remain challenging."
