Volkswagen Golf Celebrates 40th Anniversary
Volkswagen will be celebrating their 40th anniversary of their Golf. The first Golf went into production on 29th of March, 1974 in Wolfsburg. The car was famously known as 'rabbit' in US markets.
The Golf was Volkswagen's successor to their popular car 'Beetle'. The Beetle had a rear mounted engine, while Golf broke the tradition and got a front mounted engine with front-wheel drive.

Volkswagen are celebrating the Golf history with a special appearance at Techno Classica Essen. It is Germany's grandest classic car events. The event will showcase cars from then till now.
Volkswagen will be getting Racer Hans-Joachim Stuck a.k.a. 'Strietzel' for the Techno Classica Essen to grace the event. Along with that there will be the Salzburg Beetle, Beetle RSi and Volkswagen E-Bugster among the Power Beetles category.
The very first Golf from Volkswagen was manufactured in 1974. It had a front-wheel drive configuration, superior suspension in it's period and water-cooled engine.

Volkswagen called their first Golf the 'Mark 1 Golf', it was designed by Giorgio Giugiaro and Volkswagen design. The Golf had a heap of expectations due to the successful Beetle from VW.
The Golf is Volkswagen's most popular and best selling car in their current portfolio. Last year in 2013, the German car manufacturer rolled out its 30 millionth Golf build by them.
