Tata Motors & Chery Automobile Of China Looking To Begin Partnership

By Ganesh

Tata Motors is said to be holding discussions with Chinese automaker Chery Automobiles over sharing of platforms and helping each other with introducing their products in their respective countries.

One main area of talks is concerned with Tata Motors acquiring Chery's vehicle platforms, according to an ET report. Chinese newspaper Nanfang Daily had also reportedly earlier that Cherry was looking to sell its QQ, A1 and M1 micro sedans and the A3 compact car platforms to Tata motors.

The reason why Tata Motors would be interested in acquiring platforms from Cherry, particularly of the QQ, would be to accelerate the development process of a Maruti Alto competitor. Purchasing an existing, tried and tested platform is far easier, less time consuming & not to mention less expensive than developing a new one.

Chery QQ is one of the Chinese automaker's best selling cars in its home country. The QQ is actually the modern iteration of Daewoo Matiz, thought it has been thoroughly modernized. However, Cherry itself entering India is not likely to happen, at least in the near future.

"It is a very broad-ranging talk right now, with nothing specifically defined as yet," a source is reported to have said, even as another informant says "Teams have been visiting, but there is no direction yet as synergistic benefits are minimal." It is evident that nothing concrete has emerged out of these talks as is clear from these statements.

Interestingly, Tata Motors owned Jaguar Land Rover already has a joint venture with Chery Automobile which has to do with the latter manufacturing the British automaker's vehicles for the local market.
