Tata Motors Develop First Locally Made Petrol Engine
Tata Motors, who usually build diesel engines, has unveiled its first locally developed petrol engine for passenger vehicles. The company hopes this will help in gaining market share.
The engine is christened 'Revotron' and marks a shift in their product portfolio.
Tata Motors President of Passenger Vehicle Business, Ranjit Yadav explained, "With the launch of 1.2 litre four-cylinder Revotron engine with multi-point fuel injection technology, Tata Motors passenger vehicles business is making a strategic shift towards a more complete portfolio. Also, we are enhancing our portfolio with the Revotron engine series."
He also added saying the petrol engine will be used in compact models like Indica and Indica Vista. The 'Revotron' engine will be offered this year. However, a timeline or a model where it will be used, weren't revealed.

The Indian company has the ability to produce both petrol as well as diesel engines. However, they do not want to depend solely to a particular segment. "we want equal representation in both petrol and diesel markets," said Yadav
Tata Motors has chosen an appropriate time to launch it's engine. As the gap between petrol and diesel is narrowing, thanks to a deregulation of diesel prices. The Government has shown its intent to let oil marketing companies determine diesel prices.
The 'Revotron' engine has inputs from renowned global giants in the field of combustion, boosting, friction and calibration to achieve segment leading performance.Yadav believes, the engine will deliver a balance in relation to power, performance and fuel economy and will be a global product.
Tata motors consulted global engine specialist AVL of Austria, Bosch for technology, Mahle, INA and Honeywell. All in an effort to get the best technology for it's 'Revotron'.
