Maruti Suzuki To Sell Commercial Trucks In India From 2015

By Ganesh

Suzuki might be India's largest car company, with over 40 percent share. But it is definitely feeling the heat from rivals in recent years and competition is only about to get tougher in the future.

It is then a good idea to try to bring in more business by tapping into different segments of four wheelers all together. It is being reported that Suzuki Motor will get into the commercial trucks business in India from 2015.

The Japanese automaker will start small with a light weight goods carrier based on the Carry, which is the commercial vehicle version of the Maruti Omni minivan.

The automaker is also said to be working on a new 800cc diesel engine to power its new small truck. Suzuki will utilize Maruti Suzuki's Gurgaon manufacturing facility to assemble the new minitruck.

While the commercial truck segment in India is largely dominated by Tata Motors and to a smaller extent by Mahindra & Ashok Leyland, Suzuki will take advantage of its well established name and extensive service and sales network that reaches every nook and corner of India to sell its commercial vehicles in rural areas, which accounts for most of the small commercial vehicle sales.

Suzuki intends to price the Carry based minitruck competitively, with a tag of around INR 4 lakhs, targeting annual sales of 1 lakh units.
