Mumbaikars To Pay More For A Second Car
The state transport department is planning to increase motor vehicle tax to a maximum of 200% for a second car in Mumbai. In an attempt to decrease the vehicle population in the city. A 10% annual growth has been witnessed over the years.
The plan is to increase vehicle tax by 150-200% for those planning to buy a spare car. A 10-13% tax was levied on your existing car, however a maximum of 39% tax could be added soon, on the purchase of a .second car.
The Department will be presenting the proposal of increase in motor vehicle tax for a second car to the chief minister soon. The proposal will require car owners to declare the number of vehicles owned.
Department officials believe, Mumbaikars own two-three cars per family, which leads to congestion. With a hike in vehicle tax, they are trying to curb the purchase of extra cars. Data suggests 15% in the city have two or more cars per family.

Cars like BMW and Audi, attract vehicle tax in the range of Rs 5 lakh to Rs 7 lakh. An RTO official explains,"If people have to pay Rs 21 lakh as vehicle tax, maybe they will have second thoughts about buying another car".
The transport department plans include, increasing parking costs and adding a special tax on diesel and petrol cars. These measures should hinder citizens buying new cars and will get them on the roads less.
Experts fear that the number of cars in the city will cross one million in a matter of years. The vehicle population of Mumbai including two-wheelers, trucks and buses is 22 lakh units, however in 2006 it was 14 lakh units.
An average growth of 7% in the number of vehicles in Mumbai has been recorded in the last seven years. On an average a minimum of 300 to 350 new vehicles come out daily on the road.
