Mercedes Planning To Make Maybach Its Luxury Division Again
Mercedes have announced the re-launch of Maybach. Limited only to super luxury sedans, Mercedes want Maybach cars to be the luxury versions of their cars, similar to how AMG represents their performance division.

Mercedes will bring back the name with the GL-Class SUV as a start. At the moment, they have announced two models- the S-Class and the GL- Class. The Maybach-tagged vehicles will have top notch interiors with a few external tweaks to boot.

The new GL will compete with super luxury SUVs like Lamborghini and Bentley. It could have features like semi- active suspension and the all new Curve Tilting technology. Unlike the S-Class based version which is longer than the original car, the GL will retain its original wheelbase.

In 2002, after revival, Maybach introduced two cars. The Maybach 57 and 62. These were based on the Mercedes S-Class. The 57 was designed to be self-driven and the 62 chauffeured. The twin-turbo V12 engines produced 540 Ps.

57 S
The 57S, "s" for Special", was revealed in 2005. This car used a 6.0-litre of the V12 engine, produced 611 Ps and 1001 Nm of torque. The 57S could accelerate to 60 mph from standstill in under 5 seconds.

62 S
The 62S had exactly the same engine and suspension setup as the 57S. This car was revealed in 2006. The 62S had similar acceleration figures despite weighing more than 6000 pounds.

Maybach's comeback is set for 2014. Based on the Mercedes S-class, it is 200 mm longer than the S-Class. This car features premium leather upholstery and exclusive interiors like how any Maybach should have. It will be priced almost double to that of a normal S-Class.

Maybach was taken over by Daimler-Benz in 1960 and made special edition cars tagged under Benz. Their cars are mostly hand-made. The Maybach W1 which was made in 1919 was their first experimental car, whose inline 6-cylinder engine produced 46 horsepower. Maybach, began its tale in 1909 with Wilhelm Maybach in Germany. The company began operations making petrol and diesel engines.
