Maruti Suzuki, Indian Railways Flag Off Flexi Deck Auto-Wagon Rake
Trains have always been an ideal and economical mode of transportation for auto companies and one automaker that has make the most use of the railways is India's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki.
On March 5, 2014 Maruti Suzuki became the first company in India to deploy a new high capacity train in association with the Indian railways.
The new train or rake started off from Gurgaon railway station towards Nidavanda, Bangalore carrying a range of Maruti cars. Technically called BCACBM, the new high capacity set of wagons is called Flexi deck auto-wagon rake.
Designed by Indian Railway's Research Design & Standards, the Flexi deck auto-wagon rake is more flexible and faster besides being of higher capacity compared to standard automobile car transport rakes.
The new Flexi deck rake has 20 percent additional capacity of 318 cars against 265 cars of current twin-decker coaches. The new rake, with its height adjustable middle deck, is also more flexible as it can transport vehicles of different dimensions.
Higher capacity automatically translates to higher economy and lower carbon emissions, which makes the Flexi deck auto-wagon rake environment friendly.
The new rake is also faster, capable of speeds of up to 95 km/h against 65 km/h of current rakes. These new trains can thus cover the distance between Gurgaon and Bangalore in 5 days as compared to 7 days by road transportation.
Maruti Suzuki has purchased three of the new Flexi deck auto-wagon rake consisting of 27 wagons each. Maruti will deploy the new rakes in high-volume West and South Indian locations and will subsequently dispatch cars through railways to several destinations across India such Nagpur, Siliguri, Mumbai, Pune, Mundra & Kolkata.
