Mahindra Reva e2o Launch In Europe; Verito Electric In Bhutan In 2014

By Ganesh

Mahindra Verito electric sedan, showcased at the Auto Expo 2014, is near production ready and a company executive recently stated that if required it could be made production ready in six months. However, the company will not launch the electric sedan in India without government subsidies as it would be too expensive to sell.

However, the Verito electric sedan has good potential outside of the country. Speaking at an event in Bangalore on Feb 18, 2014, Mahindra Reva CEO Chetan Maini said that the company is looking to export the electric sedan to Bhutan where it will take on the role of taxis.

The Bhutan government is said to be looking to replace its entire petrol taxi fleet and government cars with electric vehicles. And the Verito sedan's spacious interior, with its ample legroom and capacity to seat three adults at the rear makes it ideal for taxi duty.

If Mahindra is able to successfully negotiate with Thimphu, the first zero emission, production Verito electric sedans could begin appearing in the Himalayan nation before the end of this year.

Maini also revealed that a European version of the Reva e2o is already under development and exports would begin sometime during October or November this year. Since the company already has prior experience of selling the REVAi in Britain, the e2o will make its first appearance outside India here, which will be followed soon by launches in other European nations.

Mahindra already sells the reva e2o in Nepal and in the near future, will start selling its electric vehicles in neighbouring countries, including Sri Lanka.

As for the future of electric vehicles in India, Mahindra as well as other manufacturers are holding back from launching new EV until the government begins providing financial aid under the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP) that's long delayed.
