Kimi & Fernando Pay Tribute To Ratzenberger & Senna

By Ajinkya

On the 1st of May, 1994, Formula One lost its most prized possessions and a talent that cannot be replicated in today's day and age. Brazilian F1 driver for Williams, Ayrton Senna was that talent.

Senna was leading the San Marino Grand Prix in Imola, Italy. His car lost control and crashed into the Tamburello corner at a speed of approximately 233 km/h. The Brazilian driver was declared dead on the spot.

Senna's death however, overshadows the death of another driver who passed away a day prior in the qualifying session.

Roland Ratzenberger passed away in an accident at the same San Marino Grand Prix. His accident occurred on the 30th of April, 1994.

Ratzenberger's car lost a wing on his car which went under the vehicle and did not allow him to turn into the corner. He hit the wall of the Villeneuve corner at a speed of 314.9 km/h and was declared dead on arriving at the hospital.

Scuderia Ferrari has planned a tribute in honour of the two drivers Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger at Imola. Present at the event were current Ferrari drivers Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso. Also present were Jules Bianchi and Pedro de la Rosa.

They maintained a minute of silence at the exact hour of death that is 14 hours 17 minutes. They had speeches read out at the Tamburello corner where the accident occurred.

Both Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso spoke at the event. The Spaniard said the following,"I can well remember the photos in the papers and seeing on the TV news the stories of the duels between the McLarens of Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna. He had the number 1 on his car and I raced karts thinking about him, of his yellow helmet that was always winning."

He was also quoted saying,"I also competed in karting in Italy, working with someone who had been his mechanic when he raced in that category and so you can imagine how important that was for me. I had a poster of him up in my bedroom. The only positive thing to come out of the weekend that took Ayrton and Roland Ratzenberger away from us was that, from then on, safety in Formula 1 improved significantly. In fact, we can say that inside our cars there is something of the legacy of Senna and Ratzenberger, because after that terrible 1994, nothing was ever the same again."
