JSW Steel Opens India’s Largest, Most Modern Cold Rolling Mill
India's leading integrated steel manufacturer and largest producer and exporter of coated flat products, JSW Steel, the flagship company of the JSW Group, has inaugurated the country's largest, most advanced Cold Rolling Mill (CRM) facility.
The CRM-2 facility, with a production capacity of 2.3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), is located at Vijayanagar Works, Karnataka. The CRM-2 facility will cater to the automobile industry in India which is fast turning into a global production hub. The automobile sector demands high-end steel and exponential growth in demand for this type of steel is expected.
According to JSW Steel, this facility is the most sophisticated plant by configuration with the capability to produce advanced high strength steel, both in uncoated and coated (galvanized and galvannealed GI and GA) categories and width up to 1870mm.
The CRM-2 facility includes a continuous annealing line, which is the first to start operations in India.
Technical assistance to develop various grades of auto steel, including steel for external panels for automobiles, is being produced by JFE Steel, which is a minority stakeholder in JSW Steel.
Phase 1 of the project, which consists of a 2.3 MTPA Pickling Line coupled with a Tandem Cold Mill (PLTCM), a 0.95 MTPA Continuous Annealing Line (CAL-1) and a 0.4 MTPA Continuous Galvanising Line (CGL) is already underway. Phase 2 of the plant which will have a 0.95 MTPA CAL-2 will be commissioned during the first half of 2016.
Dr Vinod Nowal, Deputy Managing Director, JSW Steel said, "The CRM-2 is equipped with the latest technology to produce continuously annealed CR upto a strength level of 980 MPA (UTS) and auto galvanizing line with capability to produce both GI & GA upto a strength level of 590 MPA (UTS). At present, the high strength and higher grades are mostly imported."
