By Ganesh

Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping, Nitin Gadkari has said that the country's Motor Vehicle Bill will be re-drafted within a month.

The bill receive major overhaul and will be drafted in-line with the safety laws of six nations - the U.S.A, the U.K, Canada, Singapore, Japan and Germany.

The draft bill will be presented before the National Road Safety Council in a month's time and then the Parliament.

Some of these changes would be installation of CCTV cameras at all traffic signals, redesigning of heavy vehicles and centralising driving licence data to prevent misuse. Changes would also be made to the Carriage by Roads Act and Road Transport Corporation Act.

Centralization of license data would prevent or at least bring down the instances of a misuse, such as a single person using more than one license.

Once implemented, manufacturers of heavy vehicles such as trucks and buses will be required to make design changes to improve their safety.

Also, within six months, public transport vehicles in cities with population over 10 lakh will be fitted with GPS tracking system for the safety of women.
