Indian Long Term Vehicle Dependability Report

Long term vehicle dependability in India has improved. 38% owners claim they have not encountered any problem with their vehicles. The study was carried out by the J.D. Power Asia Pacific 2014 India Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), which was released today. In 2012 approximately 34% vehicle owners claimed to have no issue with their prized possession.

This study has been recorded for the past seven years. The motive of this study is to find how many vehicle owners face problem with their vehicles. The vehicles have to be between 30 to 42 months old. There are nine categories comprising of 169 vehicle related issues.

The issues can be anything from vehicle exterior, driving experience, features, controls and displays, audio and entertainment, seats, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, vehicle interior, engine, and transmission.

Mohit Arora, Executive Director at J.D. Power Asia Pacific, Singapore explained, "With improvements in engine technologies and overall vehicle build quality, diesel car owners are reporting fewer noise related problems than three years ago."

He further added, "While savings in terms of running costs have always been an advantage for diesel car owners, going forward, the ongoing refinements are likely to lead to an enhanced ride-comfort and a more positive ownership experience over the longer-term."

Maruti Suzuki's Swift Dzire received the highest rank for entry midsize segment for the fourth year in a row. The Japanese automobile giant's SX4 ranked highest in the midsize segment. While Toyota won awards with its Innova and Fortuner for MUV/MPV and SUV segment respectively.

Nissan's Micra ranks highest in upper compact segment. Skoda Fabia ranks highest in premium compact segment, while Honda Civic ranks the highest among premium midsize vehicles. The South Korean manufacturer Hyundai's Santro ranks highest in the compact segment for the second time in a span of three years.
