Hindustan Motors End Production Of Their Ambassador

By Ajinkya

The Ambassador is truly an integral part of our Indian identity. One can always picture an Indian politician being chauffeured in a white Ambassador, or how the Amby is always the first choice for taxi travel. But now, HM, producer of the ever popular Ambassador, has called it quits with manufacturing.

Hindustan Motors, who produce the iconic ambassador, delivered the sad news to their employees a few days ago. HM is a part of CK Birla Group and they have decided to shelf the manufacturing of the ambassador for an indefinite period.

The news about the Indian icon not being manufactured henceforth was broken to the 2,500 workers at the Uttarpara facility at West Bengal. The timing of the news took us as well as HM employees slightly by surprise, however, we all knew it was coming.

Hindustan Motors built the Ambassador on the Morris Oxford platform but wasn't modernised since its launch in 1957. The company tried to push sales of the car by virtue of its retro charm, however, that did not work and several other cars like the Maruti 800 capitalised on this and stole away customers.

The Indian iconic brand tried to modernise their Ambassador by planning a sub 4-metre version. However, nothing happened - it was mainly talk.

With all the modern and luxurious cars available in India, the Ambassador felt out of place. Several other manufacturers offer better products than the Ambassador for affordable prices. Sales have been ever falling, however, the last month's report gave them a real scare. HM managed to sell only five Ambassadors in the month of April, 2014.

Hindustan Motors could have learned from several other iconic manufacturers not to let go of their classics, who have given their vehicles a modern touch but retain their originality. Best examples are Volkswagen's Beetle, Fiat's 500 and the MINI Cooper - all retro vehicles with a modern and interesting twist.
