Government To Mandate Increased Passenger Car Mileage
A new proposal by authorities that is sure to make the green brigade smile with relief, seeks to ensure Indian passenger vehicles in the coming years are more fuel efficient.
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), which is the body that put out the proposal says manufacturers should improve the fuel efficiency of their passenger vehicles by 14 percent by 2016-17 and by 38 percent in five years after that.
This translates to an improvement in mileage to 18.2 km/l by 2016-17 and 22 km/l by 2021-22, ET calculates. At present, cars average 16 km/l.

If manufacturers do not comply with the rules heavy penalties would be imposed. If implemented this would put India in the same league of nations such as US, Germany, Japan and China which enforce strict rules related to fuel efficiency and emissions.
The proposed norm has been named Corporate Average Fuel Consumption (CAFC) and will affect vehicles running on all sorts of fuel, from petrol to diesel to other alternate form of fuels such as LPG or CNG. There will be no exceptions to the rule and will affect imported vehicles as well.

The percentage of fuel efficiency to be maintained by vehicles will be determined depending on their weight. The concerned authorities will set up 8 different weight categories and vehicles will be ranked based on their mileage on a star-rating system.
"If implemented, the new norms will result in a saving of about 20 million tonnes of fuel by 2025," ET quotes Ajay Mathur, director general of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) as saying.
Reacting to the proposal, SIAM has stated it would be difficult for manufacturers to comply as it would increase the burden on OEMs and would also increase the cost of vehicles.
What is your say on the new proposal? Is this the right way to go for India? Or would it lead to lighter vehicles that are less safe? Tell us in the comments section below.
