2015 GMC Canyon Revealed At Detroit Motor Show

By Ajinkya

The mid-size pick-up truck segment is not a major market in America. Manufacturers like Ford have have moved away from this segment, however Nissan's Frontier and Toyota's Tacoma are the only players in the segment. Two new mid-size pick-trucks from General Motors portfolio (GMC Canyon, Chevrolet Colorado) will compete for a spot in this segment.

GMC's Canyon base model will feature a 2.5 litre, inline-4 engine and will generate 193 bhp and 184lb ft of torque. The engine is mated to a six-speed manual or an option of six-speed automatic will be available, however it will be offered only in rear-wheel drive. The engine options in the Chevy Colorado are similar to that offered by GMC's Canyon.

The engine on the Canyon automatic variant will sport a 3.6 litre V6 and will generate 302 bhp and 270lb ft of torque. From the looks of it, an inline four, 2.8 litre turbodiesel can be expected by mid 2015.

On the styling front, the Canyon has a bolder stance compared to the Chevy Colorado. The Canyon has an aggressive grille and the projector headlights and C-shaped LED daytime running lights, are well highlighted. GMC offerings are a step-up compared to vehicles offered by Chevrolet, however expect to pay a premium price for the Canyon model.

Standard features on the Canyon will include a power driver's seat, stability control, and rear camera. Heated leather seats, 4G LTE connectivity with a Wi-Fi hotspot, and an eight-inch touchscreen navigation system will be an optional trim.

The four wheel drive on offer lacks a centre differential, however an ‘AutoTrac' mode will engage the front axle when rear-wheel slip is detected, automatically.

An optional all-terrain package in the mid-level SLE model is available by adding 17-inch off-road tires, suspension tuning, and an aggressive exterior.

The sales volume isn't great for mid-size pick-up trucks in America, however they are popular in certain regions. Models from Toyota and Nissan are not up to date, giving General Motors an opportunity to slice through the competition. Production will commence this autumn in Wentzville, Missouri, pricing will be revealed later by General Motors.

Drivespark Thinks! Pricing will be vital for GMC's Canyon as well as Chevy's Colorado, however mid-size trucks are inexpensive in America.
