The solar panel is made up of Fresnel lenses which act as solar energy concentrators and feed the solar cells. According to Ford, the electric power gathered by the solar panels in a full day under the sun is comparable to a four hour plug-in charge.

Ford C-Max Solar Energi Concept has a claimed range of nearly a 1000 km running on the combined power of petrol and electricity. The vehicle can also cover about 33 km on electric power alone.

While optimal solar charging only happens on a sunny day the C-Max Solar Energi still has the option to juice up by drawing electricity from the power grid, which makes the solar panels an additional source of power. The system is also said capable of tracking the sun as the day passes.

The automaker believes that power drawn from the sun could power up to 75 percent of all trips made by an average person. Additionally, Ford sees vehicles such as the C-Max Solar Energi Concept as the sort of electric hybrid vehicles that are suited for use in places where plug-in charging infrastructure is not available.
