Ferrari Will Not Fire Raikkonen, Gets Additional Race Engineer Instead

By Ganesh

If you have been following the on-going Formula 1 season then you would know that Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen, a former World Champion, has not been performing as expected. While it is true that both the F14 T are under performing this year, Raikkonen in particular has been having a tough time to match the pace of his team mate Fernando Alonso.

It was only a matter of time then before rumours about Ferrari contemplating sacking the Finnish driver arose. But even as these rumours surfaced, other reports have come up to squash them at their bud.

According to German magazine Sport Bild, Ferrari will not fire Raikkonen a second time when his contract lasts till 2015. The last time he was fired from Ferrari was back in 2009 and the Maranello team had to pay $30 million to do so.

That's because he was terminated while his contract was still in place. Repeating the same mistake again would result in the same consequence. A financial burden Ferrari is unlikely to be willing to bear again.

On the contrary, Ferrari has now reportedly appointed an additional engineer, David Lloyd, to assist Raikkonen's existing race engineer Antonio Spagnolo, who is an Italian. This move is believed to solve the communication problem between the Finnish driver and his Italian race engineer, which could have contributed towards Raikkonen's under performance so far this season.
