Electric Rickshaws To Come Under Motor Vehicle Act
After a recent spree of impounding electric rickshaws in the capital city, the Delhi High Court has asked the Centre to prepare a set of guidelines for these vehicles. These rules would be of a separate category but under the Motor Vehicle Act.
The new regulations state that the electric rickshaws have to be registered and the drivers should obtain a driving licence, which is easy.
These rules were made keeping in mind the owners of the e-rickshaws and safety. Sources say that officials have tried to make sure easy registration of these e-rickshaws and keeping the roadworthiness of the vehicles as prime targets.
Other issues like the number of rickshaws allowed in the city and the areas of their routes have been left to civic authorities.

According to sources, these zero emission rickshaws will be restricted to 25 km/h and can carry four passengers.
The government will soon notify the specifications of brakes, light, horn and tyres for those vehicles which are already on roads. State government agencies will verify the fitness of these e-rickshaws.
Random samples will be picked up for new vehicles by test agencies to confirm these specifications given by the authorities.
