AMG Considering Electric Turbochargers
AMG is considering the introduction of electric turbochargers into its cars, according to AMG powertrain chief, Jochen Martin Schmid.
Schmid revealed that the company is seriously looking at electric turbocharging technology, where an electric motor powers the turbocharger compressor instead of traditional exhaust gases. The benefits include full boost much lower in the rev range and easier management for delivering improved fuel efficiency.

Audi has already debuted an RS5 TDI Concept with a ‘supplemental electric turbocharger' that produces maximum power and torque in the range of just 1,250 to 2,000 rpm. The company also has plans to introduce e-turbos into the 2015/2016 Q7 range.

The AMG powertrain team has been meeting with the Mercedes F1 outfit to begin efforts to transfer technology from its successful Formula One cars to its road going performance cars. One of the main reasons the Mercedes F1 team has been dominating this year is the innovative turbocharger system.
Schmid said, ""We are linked together and working together on technical ideas, thinking ahead that someday even we may overtake some of the F1 technologies - even the principles - in the road cars."
