All-Terrain Vehicles In India To Be Manufactured Locally Soon

By Ganesh

All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) will soon cost a lot less in India if a proposal approved by the highways ministry is implemented. Minister Oscar Fernandes has reportedly approved manufacturing of ATVs in India, but it will come into effect after segment specific emission standards and safety norms are set. The ministry will also need to discuss the issue with stakeholders before a final announcement is made,

ATVs in India are at present mostly imported, while a few popular models are assembled. The imported models attract 100 percent duty, making them expensive and repelling potential buyers.

local production of ATVs in India

Despite their high cost ATVs sales in India have lately gained ground, in part, thanks to American manufacturer Polaris, which is also the world's largest ATV maker. Once local production of ATVs is approved Polaris will be the first company to take advantage of it. Polaris, which has already received contracts from the Gujarat Police and has a good relationship with the Coastal Police and the BSF will have the first mover advantage.

Honda, another ATV major, has also shown interest in selling these off road vehicles in India, but has held back until now because of the restriction on manufacturing. The other Japanese OEMs, Suzuki and Yamaha are also likely to bring their ATVs to India once the restriction is lifted.

Speaking to ET a government official privy to the matter says, "ATVs are basically petrol-based mini-tractor style vehicles which make it easy to travel on undulating plains, but these are not good in terms of fuel efficiency and emissions. This is why we need to come up with emission standards before they can be manufactured in India."
