VW Gol Overtakes Maruti Alto As Best Selling Car

The Maruti Suzuki Alto, India's best selling car, is no longer the world's best selling car. The Indian small car which occupied the top spot for two years has been overtaken by the Volkswagen Gol, Brazil's best selling car.

The Maruti Suzuki Alto had become the world's best selling car in 2010 and had retained the position in 2011. But the year 2012 was not a happy year for the Alto. Increasing petrol prices and demand for diesel cars saw the Alto's sales dip by 9.28%. Maruti Suzuki has sold 286,833 units of the Alto in 2012.

The Volkswagen Gol has not become the world's best selling car for the first time. In fact the Maruti Suzuki Alto had taken the Gol's position in 2012. The Gol has now regained the numero uno position after two years. The Gol's sales in 2012 hit 293,293 units. The margin between the Alto and Gol might be just a few thousands but there is no denying the fact that the Gol has won this year.
