VW Passat To Attempt World Record For Fuel Economy
Maruti Suzuki, earlier this year, claimed a mileage of 45.8 kmpl for its DZire diesel model. However, that claim was non verified, thus not good enough to make it to the record books. Now, on the other side of the world the folks at Volkswagen of America have announced they will set a new fuel economy record with the VW Passat TDI Clean Diesel that will rival the DZire.
Volkswagen of America will attempt to beat the Guinness World Record for fuel economy around the "Lower 48 U.S. States for a non-hybrid car"
For the record attempt two drivers (Wayne Gerdes, founder of cleanmpg.com and Bob Winger, an electronics engineer long involved in energy and conservation projects) will drive a 2013 Passat TDI Clean Diesel 8,000 miles (12,874 km). The journey which began at Volkswagen's headquarters in Herndon, Virginia on June 7th, will last two weeks, during which the team of two will cover 48 U.S states. The progress of the Passat record car can be tracked through VW social media channels.
The 2013 Passat TDI Clean Diesel uses a 2.0 litre 140 HP diesel engine mated to a 6 speed automatic transmission. This gives the sedan an EPA fuel economy rating of 43 mpg (18.2 kpl). This is the same engine that is used in the Indian spec Passat as well. The current record stands at 67.9 mpg (28.86 kmpl), which the two drivers will attempt to break.

David Geanacopoulos, Executive Vice President for Public Affairs and General Counsel of Volkswagen Group of America, said: "This is a fun and exciting way for Volkswagen to demonstrate the efficiency advantages of diesel technology. The Passat TDI is a remarkable car and we think it has a good chance to beat the existing world record. We are also very proud that the Passat TDI is one of seven vehicles in the current Volkswagen line up that have an EPA fuel economy rating of 40 mpg or better on the highway."
