Volvo's Car Protection April Fool's Day Joke
How would Volvo, a leader in car safety features, try to fool people on April Fool's Day? With a car safety and protection related joke of course. This would make the joke believable, by making it sound practical.
So, on April 1st, the Swedish automaker came up with the world premier of the new "External Vehicle Protection (EnVeloP) system". From what you see in the image some of you might think its too crazy to be believable. But you should keep in mind that Volvo already offers external airbags for pedestrian safety that deploy in case of a collision with a passerby to minimize damage. When you consider that, EnVeloP does not sound like too crazy an idea.

Anyway, the EnVeloP system shown on a Volvo V40 comes into play anytime the car might be in situation where it might be damaged. Even rain is taken into consideration here. When sensors are activated a bag on the roof containing the folded cover, made from the same material as airbags, unwraps, enveloping the car completely in an instant, thus minimizing damage to the car.
"For years, we have been looking at how to increase safety in our vehicles, and the airbag has played a central role in that journey," said Thomas Broberg, Senior Technical Adviser Safety at the Volvo Cars Safety Centre.
"Instead of finding new areas inside the car where we could add more airbag-like safety systems, we asked ourselves: why not cover the complete car in an airbag-like solution?"
While the EnVeloP system on the Volvo might have been just a joke, do you think such a feature is practical?
