Volvo's Cyclist Detection And Auto Braking System
Volvo continues its innovation in the field of automobile safety with yet another safety feature that it has announced. This new technology is basically an extension of the existing Pedestrian Detection system, which now includes cyclists as well.
Another Volvo first safety feature, the system was announced by Doug Speck, Senior Vice President Marketing, Sales and Customer Service at Volvo Car Group at a press conference at the Geneva Motor Show. Speck said, "As the leader in automotive safety, we have been first in the industry with all detection and auto brake technologies, from the first-generation brake support in 2006 to pedestrian detection with full auto brake in 2010."

According to accident data gathered by Volvo 50 percent of all cyclist deaths in Europe occur due to collision with cars, a percentage which Volvo aims to bring down.

Part of the Pedestrian Detection system, the new package is called Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection. A fully automatic system, the car will apply brakes on its own whenever a bicycle swerves in front of the car.

The system consists of a radar unit that is integrated into the car's front grille, a camera fitted in front of the interior rear-view mirror and a central control unit. The radar sweeps the area in front and detects objects, the camera determines what sort of an object it is and the central unit continuously monitors the traffic situation. The system even works for other cars and bikes.

"Our solutions for avoiding collisions with unprotected road users are unique in the industry. By covering more and more objects and situations, we reinforce our world-leading position within automotive safety. We keep moving towards our long-term vision to design cars that do not crash," said Doug Speck.

Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection with full auto brake will be available in the Volvo V40, S60, V60, XC60, V70, XC70 and S80 models from mid-May in 2013.
