Volvo's Permanent High Beam Headlamp Won't Glare
The Swedish automaker Volvo, which offers some of the best safety features in cars has announced yet another revolutionary road safety technology that it will showcase at the Geneva Auto Show.
The new feature is the first of its kind and is an improved version of its Active High Beam Control. The feature provides a solution to one of the most common problem faced by drivers while driving at night, that of dazzling headlamps. The technology developed by Volvo will allow drivers keep their high beam turned on permanently, but without creating visibility problems for other drivers.

"Our aim with the renewed Active High Beam Control technology is to enhance visibility in the dark by making it possible to use high beam permanently, without having to switch to low beam when meeting or catching up with other cars," says Prof. Lotta Jakobsson, Senior Technical Specialist Safety at Volvo Cars Safety Centre.
Volvo Active High Beam Control makes use of selective shading and on board cameras to achieve and thus provides a much safer drive for the driver as well other cars around.
"The technology makes driving at night more comfortable and safe. It also makes it easier to focus on the driving and is an excellent example of our Designed Around You approach, always focusing on features that really make a difference to the customer," says Lotta Jakobsson.
The onboard cameras, which are also used by the collision detection system and auto brake system detect the vehicles ahead of the car and block out a certain portion of the light beam, while the remaining part of it still provides light enough for you. Volvo says the technology is "accurate enough frame the chosen object with only a 1.5° margin."
The headlamps feature an interesting projector module mechanism, containing a small cylinder, with metal pieces of different sizes inside it. It is these metal pieces which shade out a section of the beam when required.
Volvo's Active High Beam Control works at speeds even as low as 15 km/h and will be provided with Volvo S60, V60 and XC60. The Active High Beam Control will also make it's appearance in motorcycles in the future.
