Volkswagen To Launch Low Cost Car By 2015

Volkswagen Up
Volkswagen, the German car giant which is aiming to become the world's largest carmaker has set its sights on low cost cars to boost its sales. Volkswagen boss Martin Winterkorn has revealed that the company will start building a new super budget car (in our own words, low cost car) by 2015.

In a recent interview Mr Winterkorn has revealed that Volkswagen was working on a low cost car that will be priced between €6000 and €7000 (INR 4.3 and 5.1 lakh). The company decided on developing such cars in an effort to capture greater market shares in countries such as China and India.

Volkswagen's low cost car will not be developed entirely in Germany. While the initial development will be carried out in Germany, the remaining part, according to Mr. Winterkorn will be taken up by the company's partner in China.

The development of the low cost car has been split considering the cost advantages available in countries such as China. With spare parts and labour available at comparatively very low prices as against Europe, Volkswagen is hoping to build a car that is economic, inexpensive and reliable.

Volkswagen will also not embark upon developing new technologies for the low cost car. It intends to keep development costs down by using existing technology. Volkswagen's low cost car will be designed in such a way that different body styles can be built upon the same platform. These low cost cars will be sold under a new sub brand and not Volkswagen.

Volkswagen is looking at developing the first prototypes of the low cost car. We can expect the car to be stylish, simple and practical. The company has not revealed the engines and other technical aspects it is considering for the low cost car. Log on to Drivespark.com for more updates.
