Volkswagen To Hire 50000 Workers From India, China

To realize its goal of becoming the world's largest automobile company, the German auto giant VW is looking to hire additional 50,000 workers by the year 2018. The automaker already has a 550,000 strong workforce, which it wants to increase to 600,000.

The 50,000 new workers, however, will not be hired from its home country Germany or for that matter, even Europe. VW is looking towards emerging auto markets such as India, China and Russia to source its workforce from.

"Given the slump in sales we're seeing in Europe, we need to look carefully at the areas in which we boost staff numbers," Bernd Osterloh, Chairman of the General and Group Works Council, VW told German news daily Handelsblatt.

Osterloh stated that the crawling current economic situation in Eurozone has not contributed to the company's growth significantly in the recent times, but it is infact China that has been the major market. Already, out of the 300,000 VW employees who are located outside of Germany, only half the number are in Europe, Osterloh said.

VW still remains Europe's largest car maker, but it is emerging markets such as China, India and Russia that will decide the company's future in the coming years.
