Volkswagen Buggy Up Concept Design Receives Patent
In September of 2011, at the Frankfurt Auto Show, VW revealed a very likeable concept model that was based on its Up! small car. The concept, a Buggy, a car with no roof or doors, was very well received by the visitors. However, post the auto show VW made no indications about turning the Buggy Up! into a reality.
Now, an year and a half later, Autocar is reporting that VW applied for a design patent for its Buggy in March, 2012 in the U.S. The auto giant has now reportedly been granted the design patent. The patent, awarded to the Klaus Bischoff, VW design head and Peter Wouda and Thorben Kochs of VW advanced design studio, Berlin, is valid for 14 years.
While receiving a patent for a product is not guarantee that it will enter production, it certainly improves its chances of transitioning from concept form to production. Learn more about the attractive VW Buggy Up! in the gallery below.

VW Buggy is based on the Up! compact hatchback, which exists in three door, four door and even coupe forms.

While it is based on the Up!, the Buggy actually pays homage to the original VW Beetle based Buggy from the 1960s.

The Buggy is a two seater, with no doors or roof. Safety and structural integrity is provided by a roll bar.

The concept model showcased in 2011, featured 18-inch alloy wheels covered in tyres measuring 205/40.

At 3,584 mm long, the Buggy Up! is compact and comfortably seats two, with some space in the back, enough to carry stuff for a picnic on the beach.

Being a beach car, the Buggy Up! was designed to be waterproof. The designers had provided the floor of the car with water drainage areas are well.
