Toyota Camry Hybrid India Launch In August

Toyota's plan to introduce new hybrid models for the Indian market is well known. This includes a Hybrid version of the Camry sedan. According to Autocar, that day will come sooner than expected, in August.

Toyota Camry Hybrid will be assembled locally, along with the petrol Camry to keep production cost down. The hybrid version will still cost well above what the petrol Camry costs. A premium of up to INR 10 lakhs over the petrol model is what is expected.

Toyota Camry Hybrid will be powered by the same 2.5 liter petrol engine, assisted by a 640 volt electric motor. The engine will be mated to an electronic continuously variable transmission.

The 2.5 liter petrol is rated at 146 HP and a peak torque of 187 Nm, while the motor has an additional 140 PS of power and 270 Nm of torque. In conjunction they manage to deliver a peak output of 189 HP. The motor gets its power from a nickel hydride battery pack, located in the trunk.

Naturally, the Camry Hybrid will be heavier, which will be handled by a suitably modified chassis. Toyota will also outfit the Camry Hybrid with version exclusive premium features to justify the higher price tag.

Toyota expects to sell 20-25 Camry Hybrids in a month, which would account to 5 to 6 percent of total Camry sales. Never the less, the world's largest automaker seems confident about its decision. The step is certainly a bold one, considering its other hybrid model, the Prius, has hardly took off.
